SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- Worthington's lower weights carried the Trojan wrestling squad to an eighth-place finish at the 12-team Sioux Center Invitational on Saturday.
WHS officially went 1-4 in five team matches, although they lost a tie-breaker to host Sioux Center.
All five contests were against Iowa schools.
At 130 pounds, Joey Kinley went undefeated in five matches, including two pins and a 9-5 decision over the No. 4-ranked wrestler in Iowa, Sibley-Ocheyedan's Stephen Brockshus.
Jared Kinley (112) was also a perfect 5-0, pinning three of his opponents.
The Trojans were undefeated at 103 pounds, too, with Christian Artiga winning four matches and Anthony Luft picking up a decision in the fifth.
"We got a pretty good start down below," Trojans' head coach Mark Prunty said, referring to his lighter wrestlers. "We had a lot of young kids who stepped in and wrestled well."
That's because three of his grapplers weren't there -- two had other obligations and one was out sick.
But after dropping to Central Lyon/George-Little Rock 58-19, the Trojans responded with a 42-37 win over West Sioux.
The victory put WHS in the winners' bracket against stiffer competition.
The Trojans lost 48-30 to Sheldon, but battled Sioux Center to a 39-39 tie.
In a draw situation, the officials go through a certain number of tiebrakers.
They had to go all the way down to criteria No. 7 -- the team with the most "first points" in each match.
The decision went to Sioux Center, and S-O beat the Trojans in their final match, 55-19.
Jake Clarke (125) and Jordan Bents (Hwt) each picked up a pair of wins in the tournament; Junior Nguyen, Carson Hagen, Ethan Peterson, Blake Schroeder, Aaron Pavelko, Danny Rodriguez, Mike Hillesheim, Carson Hagen and Turner Hagen all won a single match.
The Trojans wrestle next on Thursday at a home triangular with Redwood Valley and Sioux City East (Iowa).
