MARSHALL -- The Worthington Junior Legion baseball team’s goal of achieving a first-round bye in the upcoming sub-state tournament fell by the wayside in Marshall on Wednesday as the Marshall Black squad earned a 12-5 victory.
It was Black’s ninth consecutive win of the season and it was highlighted by a nine-run third inning that broke open a 3-3 game.
Marshall is the No. 1 seed for the tournament and New Ulm is No. 2. Worthington, seeded third, will host Hutchinson Monday night at a starting time yet to be determined as of Thursday.
Worthington led 2-0 with two first-inning runs. Marshall took the lead 3-2 with three runs in the second, and after the visitors scored once in the top of the third, Black erupted with the help of three bases-loaded walks.
Tommy Lais went 3-for-4 at the plate for Worthington. Isaiah Noble was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, and he pitched three scoreless innings in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames.
