GARRETSON, S.D. -- Senior midfielder Marilyn Orellana scored on a corner kick in the second half, but Garretson was able to defeat the Worthington Trojans girls soccer team 7-1 on Saturday.
Orellana's score was unassisted. She curved a shot past the Garretson goalkeeper, who missed a chance to root it out before it became a point.
Though the Trojans lost, they batted .333 in their scoring chances. They had three shots on goal for the game.
"We were missing quite a few players today, which was frustrating," said WHS head coach Emily Ahlquist, and one of those players was the team's regular varsity goalie.
Instead, the Trojans used junior varsity goalkeeper Jennifer Perez, who played in both the varsity and junior varsity games.
"She did well in net," said the coach.
The Trojan girls have not won their first game of the season yet, and Ahlquist said she's going to stress fundamentals more.
"I'm going back to the basics and just the fundamentals with them, trying to build the confidence in them," she said. "I'm hoping that by the time we get to the playoffs, each girl is more confident in their individual skill, and everything will just flow together."
