Adrian’s Luettel OL of the Year
Adrian Dragons senior Lance Luettel has been named the Offensive Lineman of the Year for the 2019 All-Southwest District East Division football squad.
Luettel was one of three Dragons named All-District. Others were seniors Brandon Schnoor and Ian Stamer. AHS senior Logan Taylor and junior Preston Nelson were honorable mentions.
Murray County Central had four players chosen All-District: juniors Rylan Behnke, Dylan Johnson and Blake Schmitz, and sophomore Christian Kuball. Seniors Kyler Deacon and Tyler Winter were honorable mentions.
Stingrays start the season
WORTHINGTON -- Excellent times were turned in by Worthington Stingrays swimmers in a weekend meet with Southdale.
Six Stingrays dropped their times in three of their individual events, compared with their bests since January of 2019. Senior Grace Fields added the 100 freestyle to her 50 freestyle as an event she qualified for in the regionals, cutting .82 seconds.
The Worthington-hosted meet was the first for several local swimmers, and many attempted events they competed in for the first time. With so many competitors in the meet (Southdale had 65 athletes compared to a Stingrays team of more than 60), the competition took five hours to complete.
MLA, JCC playing at U.S. Bank
The Jackson County Central and Mountain Lake Area high school football teams are gearing up for huge games this week at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. MLA is taking on Win-E-Mac in the state 9-Man semifinals at 9 a.m. on Friday. Then at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, JCC plays Pierz in the Class AAA semifinals.
Mountain Lake Area is the top-ranked 9-Man team in the state and Win-E-Mac is No. 5. Both teams are unbeaten.
JCC is ranked No. 2 in AAA and Pierz is No. 1. Both of those teams are unbeaten also.
All-Area teams coming
Who were the top high school volleyball players in southwest Minnesota for 2019? Who were the most impressive football players?
The Globe fall All-Area teams will be revealed soon. The volleyball selections, consisting of three teams and a list of honorable mention players, will appear in Saturday’s edition of The Globe. The football team, made up of more than 11 players on both sides of the football, will appear the following Saturday.
It was an outstanding year for southwest Minnesota in both sports. Adrian, Jackson County Central and Windom Area had excellent seasons for volleyball. And in football, JCC is still going strong in the state tournament.
