Mullaney, Bickett All-South Central
WORTHINGTON -- Worthington High School senior Kyle Mullaney has been chosen the Defensive Lineman of the Year in South Central Red District football, and teammate Emmett Bickett also earned All-District status for the 2019 high school season.
A third Trojan, senior quarterback Will Brandner, was named honorable mention.
Mullaney is an offensive and defensive lineman. Bickett is a running back/linebacker.
Mullaney, who shares the defensive award with Marcus Hansen of Waseca, anchored both lines for the Trojans, and on defense he had 82 total tackles in his outstanding senior year, with 12.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Bickett led the Trojans in rushing with 469 yards while getting 85 tackles on defense. Brandner passed for 1,185 yards and five touchdowns.
Stingrays improve in Austin
AUSTIN -- Times were improved for the Worthington Stingrays swim team last weekend in Austin. Though only 21 swimmers were able to compete, impressive performances were turned in.
A new Stingray this year, 6-year-old Carlos Esparza, improved in all three of his events. Lello Barda (12), Fernando Flores (7), Evan Hansberger (13), Preston Kumi (8) and Ivan Lelazquez (11) improved in two of their events.
The team’s senior swimmer for the 15-and-over girls, Carmen Almodovar, swam the 500 for the first time and completed the event in a solid time of 7:14.09, keeping her fellow senior Stingray, Grace Fields, in her sights. Fields turned in a 6:34.25, which was a personal best.
The Worthington swim team will compete in Mankato this weekend. The meet will feature all of the teams in the Stingrays’ section.
Bouman finishes strong at SMSU
MARSHALL -- Former Pipestone Area High School star Boyer Bouman performed well in his final football game for Southwest Minnesota State University-Marshall in a 45-21 loss to Augustana University on Saturday.
A quarterback, Bouman completed 33 of 46 passes for 377 yards, one touchdown and one interception, and he also rushed for a touchdown.
SMSU finished the season with a 3-8 record.
Augustana came into the game ranked No. 5 in NCAA Super Region Four.
Wacker Academic All-District VB
ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Former Jackson County Central High School volleyball standout Lacey Wacker is one of two Northwestern College players named to the 2019 College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District Volleyball team.
Wacker is a junior physical education and health major with a 3.81 GPA. A setter on the Northwestern volleyball squad, she leads the NAIA in assists per set (11.9) and ranks among the GPAC’s top 10 in ace serves. She is a two-time all-conference selection and was named an NAIA third-team All-American last season.
