ESTHERVILLE, Iowa -- The hospitality in the Hawkeye State left a little bit to be desired Saturday for the Minnesota West Community and Technical College basketball teams. Iowa Lakes beat the Lady Jays 95-65, and the men also lost, 109-79.

The setback dropped the West women’s team to 1-4 on the season. For the Bluejay men, it was their first loss in four starts.

Iowa Lakes got off to a fast start, leading 24-14 at the end of the first quarter and taking a 50-30 lead into halftime.

Breanna Wendland scored 24 points for the winners while Shareece Smith added 19 points and Bethany Rehse scored 17. Smith also had 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who out-rebounded West by a 41-29 margin.

Lakes hit 57 percent of its field goal attempts compared to 37 percent for Minnesota West.

Lexie Ramsey tallied 16 points for the Lady Jays and also had three assists. Alanna Goetzinger scored 10 points and Evelyn Othow had nine. Emily Wilke scored 12 points off the bench.

Iowa Lakes 109, Bluejays 79

Like the Iowa Lakes women, the Iowa Lakes men were hot from the field hitting 65.2 percent of their field goal tries. They made 50 percent -- eight of 16 -- from 3-point land.

Minnesota West converted 11 of 31 3-pointers and hit 43 percent from the field overall.

Six Lakers reached double figures. Kevin Cook scored 19 points, Keshawn Pegues had 16, Boston Grimes 15 and Justin Brookens 14. Alan Kikwaki and Xavier Evans chipped in with 13 points apiece.

Jaimon Cheek scored 14 points for Minnesota West while teammates Christophe Bwanya had 13, Jacquez Stoudemire 11 and Christofer Morales 10.

Elijah Williams and Traelius Robinson pulled down six rebounds each for West.
