LITCHFIELD -- The No. 2 seed of the Section 3A boys hockey tournament eliminated the No. 7 team Thursday night, a couple of days after that seven seed won its first playoff victory in seven seasons.

Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato handled the Worthington Trojans 5-1 to advance to section semifinal action Saturday at Lund Arena on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

On Tuesday, Worthington opened tournament play with an impressive 11-4 win over Redwood Valley. It was a game in which the Trojans blistered the net with seven second-period goals.

On Thursday, Worthington and Litchfield/DC were tied 1-1 in the first period before the home team tacked on a goal late to bring a 2-1 lead into the second. The Trojans were unable to gain the momentum they had in the opening frame, however.

Senior Krew Aljets scored Worthington’s lone goal.

Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato put up 44 shots, overall, to Worthington’s 24.

In other quarterfinal games Thursday, top-seeded Hutchinson shut out Fairmont 10-0, Luverne edged Marshall 4-3 and New Ulm beat Windom Area 9-2.

Luverne, the No. 4 seed, defeated third-seeded Marshall despite getting out-shot 46-15. Tyler Roberts had two goals for the Cardinals while Colby Crabtree and Brock Behrend had the other goals. Landon Frost, Bryson Whyte and Jackson Bladholm scored for Marshall -- the final goal of the game from Bladholm.
