LITCHFIELD -- The No. 2 seed of the Section 3A boys hockey tournament eliminated the No. 7 team Thursday night, a couple of days after that seven seed won its first playoff victory in seven seasons.
Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato handled the Worthington Trojans 5-1 to advance to section semifinal action Saturday at Lund Arena on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
On Tuesday, Worthington opened tournament play with an impressive 11-4 win over Redwood Valley. It was a game in which the Trojans blistered the net with seven second-period goals.
On Thursday, Worthington and Litchfield/DC were tied 1-1 in the first period before the home team tacked on a goal late to bring a 2-1 lead into the second. The Trojans were unable to gain the momentum they had in the opening frame, however.
Senior Krew Aljets scored Worthington’s lone goal.
Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato put up 44 shots, overall, to Worthington’s 24.
In other quarterfinal games Thursday, top-seeded Hutchinson shut out Fairmont 10-0, Luverne edged Marshall 4-3 and New Ulm beat Windom Area 9-2.
Luverne, the No. 4 seed, defeated third-seeded Marshall despite getting out-shot 46-15. Tyler Roberts had two goals for the Cardinals while Colby Crabtree and Brock Behrend had the other goals. Landon Frost, Bryson Whyte and Jackson Bladholm scored for Marshall -- the final goal of the game from Bladholm.
Windom Area’s goals against New Ulm were tallied by Alex Espenson and Brady Espenson. Kyle Espenson had two assists and Wyatt Haugen had one.
Semifinal games are at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter on Saturday, with Hutchinson playing Luverne at 6 p.m. and Litchfield/DC playing New Ulm at 8 p.m.
