MANKATO -- Goals were not easy to come by for the Worthington Trojans girls soccer team Tuesday night. Shots, too, were few.
In their first section tournament game at Bethany College in Mankato, the Mankato East Cougars used four first half goals and three in the second half to subdue the Trojans, 7-0. Ella Huettl had three of the Cougars' goals, and teammate Megan Geraets had two.
Crosses and breakaways accounted for most of Mankato East's goals. For the game, East attempted 34 shots to Worthington's three.
Despite the loss, WHS head coach Emily Ahlquist said Chantel Peralta had an outstanding night in the net for the Trojans. The defensive line played well, too.
"Our team didn't give up. We just played a team that was a lot stronger than we are," Ahlquist said.
She said that the team improved this year while adopting a positive mentality. The Trojans started to believe in themselves, said the veteran coach, and demonstrated that they know they can compete.
