SIBLEY, Iowa -- In the regular season, Rock Valley and Sibley-Ocheyedan split a pair of Iowa girls basketball games. But in the rubber match, Rock Valley won the one that counted most.
Tuesday night, in a Class 2A, Region 7 quarterfinal contest, Rock Valley edged the Generals 54-53 to move on. Sibley-Ocheydan trailed by five with about two minutes remaining in the game but managed to tie the score with 38.8 seconds yet to play. On Rock Valley's next possession, the Generals committed a foul. One of two free throws were made to make the score 54-53. Sibley-Ocheyedan managed to get off a couple of shots in the closing seconds, but neither went in the basket.
Abby Heemstra and Lexie Van Kekerix both scored 22 points for Rock Valley.
Bria Wasmund, who made three 3-point shots, finished with 19 points for the Generals. Ariana Noonkester had 10 points and Kelli Greenfield had nine. Madison Brouwer, who got into foul trouble early, finished with seven points.
