GARRETSON, S.D. -- After winning its season opener in an overtime affair on the road against Mankato Loyola, the Worthington High School girls soccer team had a different result Saturday in Garretson, S.D. Host Garretson shut out the Trojans 8-0.

The hosts moved out to a 4-0 first half lead, then scored four more goals in the second half against a WHS squad that coach Emily Ahlquist said wasn't operating at full capacity. The Trojans played with half their defenders nursing injuries. That notwithstanding, the team just didn't play well.

Besides that, Worthington had to play with one less player for most of the game because of a red card penalty.

"The second half was much better as far as how they played," Ahlquist said. "We still had some stupid mistakes that cost some goals in the second half. ... It ended up 8-0, which is not what we wanted, but I think the girls learned that regardless of who we have playing on the game or who is out from injuries, we owe it to each other to play to our best ability and keep our minds focused on our jobs."
