Nate Wieneke led off the top of the 13th inning by reaching first base on a catcher’s interference, stole second and scored on single up the middle by Joe Larson as the Hadley Buttermakers edged Heron Lake 8-7 in a Region 13C amateur baseball series opener Wednesday night in Worthington.
In other Region 13C openers Wednesday, Luverne beat Lakefield 10-3. Fairmont beat Wilmont 8-1 and Jackson tripped the Milroy Irish 4-1.
Action continues Friday (7:30 p.m. starts) as Luverne travels to play Lakefield, Milroy is at Jackson and Wilmont plays Fairmont in Lismore. Hadley and Heron Lake resume their series Saturday at 2 p.m. in Hadley.
Hadley 8, Heron Lake 7 (13 innings)
WORTHINGTON - Heron Lake led 7-5 until Hadley scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning.
A two-out error allowed a Buttermaker batter to reach in the ninth. Then Larson and Max Zwart hit back-to-back doubles.
Nick Bruning pitched the last five innings to get the mound victory for Hadley. Greg Quist, who pitched six and two-thirds innings of relief, was tagged with the loss.
Larson had four hits to pace Hadley’s offense, which collected 12 hits in all. Two of Larson’s hits were doubles. Teammate Wieneke had three singles and scored three runs.
Octavio Jimenez had three hits for Heron Lake. Austin Watkins had a pair of doubles. Erik Jass and Lucas Knutson each had two hits for the Lakers, who also had 12 hits overall.
One of Jass’ hits was an RBI double in the sixth.
Luverne 10, Lakefield 3
LUVERNE - Andrew DeBoer struck out 11 Lakefield batters in seven innings of work as the Luverne Redbirds defeated Lakefield 10-3.
It was a tight game until the bottom of the eighth inning when Luverne erupted for five runs.
Codie Zeutenhorst had three hits and two RBIs to lead a 16-hit Redbird attack. Phil Paquette also had three hits. Joey Slieter and Josh Slieter had two hits apiece.
For Lakefield, which collected 11 hits in all, Nolan Luhmann and Collyn Hohenstein each had a pair of safeties.
Phil Pronk took the loss for for Lakefield. He pitched six and two-thirds innings.
