LUVERNE - Both teams let one inning get away from them, but Luverne was able to do a little more with the other eight.
Worthington dropped its final game of the regular season in a 10-9 barnburner against the Redbirds.
The Cubs trailed 9-0 going into the top of the sixth inning when things started to click. Luverne’s pitchers started having trouble in locating the plate. That breathed life into the Worthington offense and got it on the scoreboard before Ryan Swanson provided the big blow.
He highlighted the eight-run inning with a grand slam, giving him a 2-for-5 effort. The Cubbies tied it with a single run in the seventh, but one in the bottom of the inning proved to be enough for the ‘Birds.
Codie Zeutenhorst pitched 2 2/3 in relief to get the win for Luverne. Tristan Sorenson took the loss, allowing three earned runs in 4 1/3 of relief work.
Skyler Wenninger finished with three hits for the home team, two of them doubles. Logan Norman was 2-for-3 with Tanner Skattum going 2-for-4.
Along with Swanson, Tommy Hayenga was also 2-for-5 for the Cubs. AJ Hayenga had an RBI triple from the leadoffs spot.
Worthington opens the First Nite and Gopher League playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against Wilmont at Lismore. Game 2 will be in Worthington Friday.
