WORTHINGTON - On a scorching, muggy afternoon, the Worthington Cubs played two on Sunday.
Both games were close, but each resulted in a loss for the home team. Fairmont picked up a 5-3 win in the early game before Wilmont scored two in the second and eventually took a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
“We just have to get a couple things to go our way,” said Cubs player/coach Josh Wasmund. “We’re sticking with ‘em.”
The Martins grabbed an early lead in the opener. Jay Ruen cracked a two-out single to score Scott Chirpich. Worthington answered back. AJ Hayenga and Wasmund perfectly executed a double steal to put Hayenga across.
Fairmont regained the lead with two in the third and never looked back.
Adam Munkel went all seven for the Cubs and took the loss. He allowed four earned runs and struck out three. Munkel and Ryan Lee had an RBI each at the plate. Tommy Hayenga, Joe Joswiak and Nate Jensen all cracked a double.
The Cubs scored one in each of the first two innings against Wilmont, but a two-run second for the Cardinals gave them some momentum. They got the lead back with one in the third while Justin Saufley shut down the Worthington bats.
Saufley allowed two earned runs and struck out six in the win.
“He’s just a good pitcher,” Wasmund said.
Lee allowed three earned over six innings in the loss for Worthington. AJ Hayenga was 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI and Wasmund drove in a run.
Joe Ahrens had a double for one of his two hits in the win. Tyler Hatterman added a pair of hits with Jay Scheidt cracking a two-bagger.
