SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Worthington put together a strong weekend on Saturday and Sunday, finishing its tournament in Sioux City with a 2-1 record and a second-place finish.
Post 5 got the weekend started with a pair of stellar pitching performances. Ryan Lee and Jordan Bertand allowed a total of three hits in Worthington’s first two games of the weekend, both of which were wins.
In the opener, Post 5 took on Wakefield-Ponca and ran away with it.
A nine-run second inning was more than enough as Worthington finished off a 12-0 victory in just four innings.
Perhaps more impressive than the offensive explosion was the showing on the mound from Lee. He went all four innings and allowed just one hit, striking out three in the process.
“We played outstanding defense in that game,” Post 5 coach Jeff Nelson said.
Worthington flexed its collective muscles in the bottom of the second. A.J. Hayenga and Blake Rogers both blasted three-run homers to lead the way in the nine-run frame that gave Post 5 a 10-0 advantage going into the third.
Hayenga finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBIs while Rogers was 1-for-1 with three driven in.
Worthington ran into some better pitching in game two, but still came out on top.
That was thanks to a two-hitter by Jordan Bertrand. A sacrifice fly by Nathan Ray that scored Lee in the second inning proved to be the game-winner. Post 5 advanced to the tournament title game with a 1-0 win.
In four innings of work, Bertrand allowed two hits and struck out five before Rogers picked up the save. Lee, Bertrand and Ray had a hit each.
The championship game brought forth another low-scoring affair. This time, it was Post 5 coming out on the bottom end of a 4-0 decision against Lincoln, Neb.
Lee took the loss on the hill and struck out five. Hayenga and Lee had a hit each.
