Legion baseball: Post 5 drops three in tough tournament

NEW ULM -- In a tournament that featured several outstanding teams, the Worthington Post 5 Legion baseball squad lost three out of four games over the weekend in the Midwest Classic at New Ulm.

Post 5 lost its opener 6-2 to Eastview/Apple Valley on Friday, then defeated Sleepy Eye by an 8-1 score before losing Saturday to Brandon Valley, 13-6.

Eastview-Apple Valley played for the championship later in the tournament. Brandon Valley athletes won the South Dakota state high school championship in 2018. Sleepy Eye was second in the Minnesota 2018 Class A tournament.

In Worthington’s opening game against Eastview-Apple Valley, Ben Rogers threw six innings while striking out one and allowing no walks, and Tyler Linder finished up. Logan Huisman was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, and Eric Heidebrink and Linder also had two hits apiece with a double.

In the Sleepy Eye game, Huisman pitched a complete game and was excellent, allowing one run and six hits. His breaking ball was exceptional, and ht finished with three walks and nine strikeouts.

Tucker Sorenson and Linder each had two hits. Karter Honius rapped a three-run double.

Worthington stayed with Brandon Valley until the seventh inning when the South Dakota team scored six runs. Heidebrink and Linder handled mound duties.

Sorenson went 2-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run. Huisman had two hits and drove in three runs. Linder hit a triple.

Finally, St. Michael-Albertville topped Worthington 10-8, getting a good start with seven runs in the first inning. Brayden Donkersloot started the game for Post 5, and Huisman pitched seven innings on short rest.

Sorenson was 3-for-3 with a double, Heidebrink hit a double, and Karter Honius had two hits while driving in two runs.
