Saturday section baseball roundup: Luverne looks sharp
The Luverne Cardinals continue showing that they’re the team to beat in Section 3AA baseball.
Coach Mike Wenninger’s red-trimmed outfit won two games on the first day of the tournament on Saturday, dispatching Martin County West 14-0 in five innings before romping 11-1 over Pipestone Area in another five-inning game.
In both games, the Cardinals scored in bunches. Against MCW, they posted five runs in the first inning and later added seven in the fourth. Against the Arrows, they plated seven runs in the third and put the game away with four in the fifth.
Gaige Nath went 3-for-4 at the plate in the first game, with a double. Ben Serie was 3-for-4 with a double and a triple. And Jake Haugen was 3-for-3.
In the second game, Serie and Haugen doubled and Derek Lundgren had a hit and two RBIs.
Luverne will play Atwater-Cosmos/Grove City in a winner’s bracket game Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Marshall. ACGC defeated Minnewaska Area and New London-Spicer in Saturday games.
In the other winner’s bracket game, Paynesville will take on Fairmont at 5 p.m. in Marshall.
Windom Area won its first game Saturday, 4-3 over St. James Area. But the Eagles, seeded third in the south, lost its next game 4-0 to the south’s second seed, Fairmont.
WAHS will play Pipestone Area on Tuesday in the elimination bracket, beginning at 7 p.m. in Jackson.
Jackson County Central was beaten in its tournament opener by Fairmont, 10-0.
The Adrian Dragons won twice on Saturday, and convincingly. In their first Section 3A tournament game, the No. 2 south seed defeated Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 8-3, overcoming a 3-2 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Ian Stamer was the winning pitcher and Lance Luettel earned the save. Brent Hokeness was 4-for-4 at the plate for AHS while Marshall Wagner, Noah Reyne and Grant Jansma all had two hits. Hokeness put Adrian up for good with a bases-loaded double in the fifth. Wagner homered.
The Dragons pounded Edgerton/Southwest Christian in its next game. Jansma was the winning pitcher, going a full six innings and striking out nine. Hokeness and Jansma both had a pair of hits.
Adrian advances to play Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, the top-seeded team from the north, at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Milroy.
Murray County Central got things started off right on Saturday with a 7-5 win over Wabasso. Justin Benda had two hits and Danny Blankenship drove in two runs.
In their next game, however, the Rebels lost to Minneota 3-0.
Murray County Central and Edgerton/Southwest Christian Tuesday in the elimination bracket, in a 5 p.m. start in Jackson.
The Worthington Trojans were beaten 8-2 on Saturday by Mankato West in Section 2AAA. That put the Trojans, who are seeded sixth in the tournament, up against seventh-seeded Faribault on Wednesday in the elimination bracket. Game time is 7 p.m. at Johnson Park in New Ulm.
