Big events on tap: state cross country, section football and volleyball showdowns

For the southwest Minnesota sports fan, there’s something for everybody for the rest of this week, including some very important events.

Tonight (Wednesday), the Minnesota West Community College wrestling team opens its season at 6 p.m. with a dual meet against Iowa Lakes on the Worthington campus.

On Thursday, the sport is high school volleyball . In Section 3A, Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda will take on Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at 7:30 p.m. at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall for the south-section championship and the right to play for a state berth on Saturday, again at SMSU. In Section 3AA, Jackson County Central and Luverne will compete at 7 p.m. at Worthington High School for the south-section title and the right to play the north winner on Saturday at SMSU.

HL-O/F is the top seed in Section 3A South and T-M-B is No. 2. JCC is the top seed in Section 3AA South and Luverne is No. 2.

The topic switches to football this Friday as section champions are decided. In Section 3 9-Man, top seed Mountain Lake Area plays second-seeded Hills-Beaver Creek at 11:30 a.m. at SMSU, Marshall. In Section 3A, top-seeded Murray County Central will play third-seeded Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at 2 p.m., also at SMSU. In Section 3AA, top-seeded Pipestone Area squares off against second-seeded Jackson County Central at SMSU, Marshall, for a 7 p.m. start.

Murray County Central and Pipestone Area are undefeated this season. The Rebels are ranked No. 1 in the state and the Arrows are ranked No. 3.

The state cross country meet is Saturday at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The Class A boys race begins at noon, with the girls race to follow. The Class AA boys race begins at 2:30 p.m. with the girls race to follow.

Southwest Minnesota is well-represented with outstanding individual runners as well as teams. The Worthington Trojan boys are there as a team in the Class AA category, and the Luverne and Murray County Central/Fulda girls are part of the Class A team competition.

Saturday’s volleyball championships are at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, with Section 3AA beginning at 6 p.m. and Section 3A starting at approximately 7:30.
