Boys basketball: Kirk leads Mountain Lake Area

MOUNTAIN LAKE - Carter Kirk scored 20 points with 17 rebounds and four assists as Mountain Lake Area won its 16th boys basketball game in 17 tries Saturday.
The Wolverines defeated visiting Ellsworth 71-45.
Tyler Duerkson scored 17 points and Zach Dickens added 11 for the winners. Andrew Hempeck poured nine points in the hoop while getting seven rebounds and dishing out six assists.
For Ellsworth, Johnathan Kramer tallied 11 points with four assists, and Justin Kruse had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Southwest 76, Edgerton 37
EDGERTON - Erupting to a 41-17 halftime lead, host Southwest Christian coasted the rest of the way to improve to 12-2 on the season. Eleven players scored for the Eagles.
Leighton Sampson led the way with 21 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Nate Pfeifle had 14 points, five rebounds and three steals. And Clayton Huisken dished out seven assists.
Southwest Christian made seven three-point shots in the game.
Austin Mertens scored 16 points for Edgerton Public, with Riley Van Klei scoring nine.

Minneota 69, MCC 62
SLAYTON - Four Minnesota players hit double figures in a victory over Murray County Central.
Dylan Tolk scored 22 points and Daniel Harrison 16 for the winners. Austin Buysse and Jordan Beck had 13 apiece. Harrison also had nine rebounds.
Logan Kluis led MCC with 17 points and Grant Rohrer had 15 counters. Jaden Boerboom, who made three of seven from three-point range, added 13, Boerboom also had five assists and Rohrer had 11 rebounds.

OKABENA - Adrian led 71-68 before Southwestern United went on a 13-point run to finish the game.
Brandon Thurk led the winners with 21 points. Aaron Fest had 19 points, Trey Cranston 17 and Zach Schumacher 10.
Nick Reyne led Adrian with 23 points while teammates Taylor Recker and Brady Lonneman had 18 and 14, respectively.
Southwestern United is now 6-6 overall and 5-3 in Red Rock Conference play.

WESTBROOK - Outrebounding their rivals 44-18, Westbrook-Walnut Grove also got the better end of the score as four Chargers hit double figures.
Shane Buchman led the way with 16 points while Matt Otto had 14, Alex Knudson 12 and Brody Williams 11. Buchman also had 10 rebounds and Knudson had seven assists.
Justin Dierks had 17 points for Fulda, all of them coming in the second half. Cole Dierks added 16 points.
W-WG is 8-9 on the season.

FAIRMONT - Boyer Bouman scored 21 points and Collin Moeller contributed 14 for Pipestone Area, but the Arrows still couldn’t keep up with a sturdy Fairmont outfit. Pipestone Area’s shooting suffered in the second half and turnovers also hurt.
Josh Eversman tallied 26 points and Mitch Pfingsten 23 to lead the Cardinals.
The loss moved Pipestone Area to 8-7 on the 2013-14 campaign.

St. James 72, Luverne 55
LUVERNE - Zach Brandts scored 23 points to help St. James produce a come-from-behind 72-55 win over Luverne. The Cardinals led 29-27 at halftime but were outscored 45-26 in the second half - a result, in part, due to turnovers.
Walker Froehling and Ryan Menssen each scored 13 points for St. James.
Josh Slieter tallied 24, with 12 rebounds, to lead Luverne. Teammate Nolan Sawtelle had 10 points.

Girls basketball
Southwest 62, Edgerton 29
EDGERTON - In a battle of crosstown rivals, Southwest Christian rolled to victory over Edgerton Public in a girls basketball clash to advance to 10-3 on the year.
Tianna Top had 23 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for Southwest. Kassydi Vreeman had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. And Savannah Tinklenberg had eight points and four rebounds.
For Edgerton Public, Tanner Gunnink scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds.
Jenny Nelson had seven points to go along with three rebounds.

St. James 58, Luverne 37
LUVERNE - After playing to a 17-17 tie at halftime, it all turned St. James’ way in the second half as the Saints outscored the Cardinals 41-20.
Allison Brands with 22 points and Julia Beckius with 17 led the Saints.
Tara Sudenga scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds for Luverne, now 5-10.
