LUVERNE - Jaxon Nelson recorded a hat trick as the Luverne Cardinals boys hockey team blitzed New Ulm 8-2 Friday night.
New Ulm upset Luverne in the section championship last year, but Friday’s win gave the Cards a 2-0 record against the Eagles this season.

The Cardinals outscored New Ulm 4-1 in the first period and 4-0 in the second to take a commanding lead into the third period.
“We’re getting closer,” said Luverne head coach Kullen Schroht after the contest, which upped his team’s record to 17-5. “This was one of the black-and-blue games. A lot of good hitting - a lot of oohs and aahs from the crowd tonight.”
Luverne attempted 50 shots compared to New Ulm’s 17.
Kaden Ericson was in goal for the Cardinals.
