EDGERTON - In a showdown between two southwest Minnesota rivals, Worthington defeated Southwest Christian 5-0 in a boys varsity soccer match Thursday.
The Trojans scored two first half goals and three in the second half, and goalkeeper Angel Flores kept his net clean.
MooDay Wah scored the game’s first goal with an assist from Tony Martinez. Chris Cerda scored an unassisted goal still before halftime.
In the second half, WHS got the offense going again as Edwin Hernandez, with an assist from Martinez, tickled the Eagles’ net. Ivan Rodriguez added an unassisted goal and Tom Hanselmann scored later from an assist by Sergio Talamantes.
Worthington head coach Smitty Ektnitphong said the Trojans started a bit slowly. Though the ball movement was good - Worthington connected 15 to 18 passes at times without losing the ball - it had difficulty finishing due to high Southwest Christian traffic near the goal.
But in the second half, the Trojans’ quickness became more evident.
Worthington attempted seven shots in the first half and eight in the second half. Southwest had two shots in the first half and no shots in the second half.
All three of Worthington’s second half goals were scored in the first 14 minutes.
