MANKATO -- Vilath Lovan had never beaten Mankato West.

But Thursday's boys' soccer game changed all that for Worthington's head coach.

The Trojans scored three goals on penalty kicks, earning a key 3-1 victory Thursday.

"It's a good win, but we didn't play well as a team," Lovan said. "It's a big game, I think the kids were kind of nervous."

The Trojans went into the game with motivation on the mind. The Scarlets knocked Worthington out of the section playoffs a year ago.

Juan Flores scored two goals on penalty kicks after West was called for a pair of handballs in the box.

"We attacked and would get the ball inside the box and we would try to pass," Lovan said. "Those guys just couldn't keep their hands down and we get a penalty out of it."

Jairo Mendoza also made a PK after Naakoo Omot was tripped in the box.

Jordan Balster made five saves for Worthington, while the Trojans peppered the Scarlet goal with eight shots.

"Our defense did pretty good today," Lovan said. "Even though we gave up a scramble in the box and they tapped it in."

Worthington will travel to Marshall on Tuesday.

Worthington 2 1 -- 3

West 0 1 -- 1
