Boys tennis: Luverne loses twice at state tournament

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Luverne Cardinals boys tennis team bowed out Tuesday at the 2019 class A state tournament.

Rochester Lourdes beat the Cards 6-1 in the first round Tuesday morning at Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis. In the consolation bracket later Tuesday afternoon, Thief River Falls beat LHS by an identical 6-1 score.

In their opener against Rochester Lourdes, Cardinals Griffen Jarchow and Blake Frahm defeated the Eagles’ Ethan Hubbard and Wiliam Rooke 6-4, 0-6, 10-2 at No. 3 doubles. Lourdes captured the other two doubles matches and all four singles bouts, however, sending Luverne into the consolation bracket.

Jonathan Onigkei bested Luverne’s Matt Jelken 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Mirjan Veldic topped Graham Cunningham 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Nolan Morrey beat Colin Schoeneman 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. And at No. 4 singles, the Eagles’ Ethan Leeser was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over the Cardinals’ Pierce Cunningham.

At No. 1 doubles, Lourdes’ Nick Pittner and Birch Lewis won 6-3, 6-1 against Cole Stoltenberg and Matt Sehr. At No. 2 doubles, Frederick Suhler and Thomas Eckel defeated Jordan Winter and Carson Ehde 6-1, 6-1.

Luverne’s only win against Thief River Falls also came at No. 3 doubles where Jarchow and Frahm earned a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Reece Janisch and Rhett Janisch.

Once again, the Cards were shut out in singles. Thief River Falls’ Cole Gillespie beat Jelken 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1. Camden Broadwell defeated Graham Cunningham 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Tucker Skime beat Schoeneman 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. And Jack Onkka beat Pierce Cunningham 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4.

The Thief River Falls first doubles team of Noah Rupprecht and Dylan Hahn won 6-3, 6-1 over Stoltenberg and Sehr. And the second doubles duo of Aiden Martell and Ethan Janisch won 6-0, 6-3 against Winter and Ehde.

This week’s appearance in the state class A tournament marked the 10th consecutive for LHS. The Cardinals defeated top-seeded Worthington in the Section 3A team finals.
