GRANITE FALLS - Sweeping all three doubles matches, the Worthington Trojans boys tennis team defeated Yellow Medicine East on Monday, 5-2.
Worthington’s Sebastian Licea and Gage Langerud, fresh from a solid winning performance on Friday against Lac qui Parle Valley, defeated rivals Miles Jensen and Cody Zimmer 6-3, 6-4 on Monday at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2, the Trojans’ Jordan Jensen and Brandon Harberts won 6-1, 6-2 over Nick Schindle and Brandon Olson. And at No. 3 doubles, Worthington’s Kip Jenson and Sully Merrigan won 6-0, 6-3 over YME’s Jakob Pringle and Tyler Syring.
Worthington won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches with brothers Bryan and Blaine Doeden.
Bryan defeated Matthew Viring 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1, and Blaine topped Noah Lush 7-5, 6-4.
Yellow Medicine East won the other doubles matches. Cody Speh beat the Trojans’ Kyle Janssen 7-5, 7-6 at third singles. And Ammon Bennett defeated Worthington’s Max Langerud 6-3, 6-4 at fourth singles.
“They are very consistent and patient,” WHS head coach Mike Marquardt said about YME. “We really had to step up today and hit better shots, passing shots and finishing shots at the net.”
WHS travels to play Redwood Valley today (Tuesday).
