WORTHINGTON -- Byron and Mankato West won first-round junior varsity games at the Globe-Trojan Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament.
Byron defeated Jordan 69-61 at the Worthington High School gymnasium Friday afternoon, followed by Mankato West’s 53-38 triumph over the host Trojans.
The Scarlets led Worthington 26-22 at halftime and stretched their lead to double digits, 34-24, with 11:53 to go in the second half. A West 3-pointer made the score 37-25.
WHS put on some full-court pressure at the nine-minute mark, but the Scarlets handled it well en route to the 15-point win.
Gibson Blackstad led West offensively with 15 points. Teammates Duang Buk and Aidan Corbett contributed 10 and 7 points, respectively.

Abagotte Opiew with 11 points and Jeikgoy Wiel with 7 led Worthington.
In the early game, James Durst tallied 19 points and Josh Petersen 12 for Byron. Petersen scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half.
Isaac Young had 18 points and Austin Smith 10 for Byron, which drained 11 3-point shots in the game.
