ROCHESTER - The Minnesota West Lady Jays volleyball team dropped a pair of tournament matches Friday on the first day of the two-day Rochester Invitational.
West lost to Ellsworth Community College 25-18, 25-12 and 25-10, then fell to Harper College of Illinois 25-10, 25-13 and 25-21.
The Lady Jays began slowly, said head coach Marie Johnson.
“In our first match I think we definitely came out sluggish. If one part of our game was on, the next thing was off,” she said. “The first match kind of carried over.”
The problem, Johnson explained, was that although the Lady Jays did some things well, they couldn’t manage to do all things well at the same time.
Rebecca Kazemba, a freshman from Round Lake, led Minnesota West with seven kills in the first match with Ellsworth. Dani Hermeling contributed eight set assists.
Becca Linder and Rachael Evans had seven digs each. Kazemba and Erin Swenson added six digs apiece.
In the Harper College match, Linder and Kazemba each had five kills. Hermeling was credited with nine set assists and nine digs. Swenson and Kazemba had seven digs apiece. Linder also had two blocks.
Minnesota West continues in the tournament today. The Jays will play Hibbing at 9 a.m. this morning, then face Central Lakes at 11 a.m.
