FAIRMONT -- Gearing up for the fall cross country season as an incoming freshman at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) in Marshall, Heron Lake’s Logan Knutson clocked a winning time of 28:54 in the five-mile run of the 39th annual Fairmont Summer Road Race last Saturday, July 29.
Running up front early, Knutson was timed at 14:15 at the halfway point before assuming the lead and widening the gap over the final 2.5 miles. Blue Earth’s Grant Strukel (30:07), Fairmont’s Josh Sundblad (30:24) and Fairmont’s Andrew Moeller (30:49) finished second, third and fourth, respectively.
It was Knutson’s third race victory at Fairmont in the past year. As a senior at Heron Lake-Okabena High School, he was the gold medalist at the 12-team I-90 Invitational at Cedar Creek Park last October and finished first overall in the 3,200-meter run at this year’s Sentinel Relays in early May.
