FAIRMONT -- Freshman Fanuel Wolday and junior Mikele Walu finished third and sixth, respectively, to lead the Worthington High boys cross country squad to the team championship here Thursday at the I-90 Invitational.
Senior Alec Langerud was ninth and junior Ofbeka Morke finished 11 as coach Cory Smidt’s Trojans won the meet with 46 points. Mankato East was second with 73 points, followed by Belle Plaine (79), St. James Area (92) and Jackson County Central (118).
Earning boys’ medalist honors was Belle Plaine’s Emmett Gerres, who finished the 5K course in 15:49.2. Isaiah Anderson of Mankato East was second in 16:17.1, followed by Wolday (16:51.2) and JCC’s Andrew Boyum (16:56.5).
Others running well were Walu (17:05.7), JCC’s Evan Paplow (8th in 17:06.9), Langerud (17:07.8) and Morke (17:18.3).
In the girls’ competition, meanwhile, Fairmont’s Laura Thompson earned medalist honors and the Mankato East squad won the team title.
Mankato East scored 42 points, with Belle Plaine finishing runner with 51 points. Fairmont was third with 74, followed by St. James Area (131) and Jackson County Central (149).
Worthington’s girls finished eighth with 186 points.
Thompson covered the 5K course in 18:23.8.
Worthington’s top finisher was senior Nicole Wede, who finished 42nd in 24:05.0
