FAIRMONT -- The host Fairmont Cardinals scored three or more runs in each of the second, third, fourth and fifth innings Thursday to beat visiting Worthington 17-8 in high school baseball.
Worthington, however, led 6-1 after an inning and a half, having scored five times in the top of the second.
Jake Brandner, Tate Gaul and Isaiah Noble all saw pitching action for the Trojans. Brandner took the loss after getting touched for 10 runs (three were unearned) in three innings. Gaul pitched an inning and two-thirds and gave up seven runs (four earned). Noble held the Cardinals hitless in 1.1 innings, striking out two with no walks.
At the plate, Kent Lais led the Worthingtonians, collecting three hits in four at bats. One of his hits was a double.
Worthington is scheduled to host Pipestone Area Friday in a 5:30 p.m. start.
