FAIRMONT — Back in mid-May, the Hadley Buttermakers defeated Fairmont and starting pitcher Tyler Tennyson 20-5 in an amateur baseball game.
On Wednesday Tennyson and the Martins got even.
Tennyson cracked a two-run home run in the first and pitched three scoreless innings as Fairmont defeated Hadley 16-2 in Game 1 of a Region 13C best-of-three series that will decide a state-tournament berth.
Jon Traetow went 4-for-4 with five RBIs for the Martins, who won the State C championship two years ago.
Tennyson and relievers Adam Schmidt and Joey Flores limited Hadley to two hits — singles by Joe Larson and Danny Blankenship.
Eli Anderson had four hits for Fairmont (21-11), while Dylan Grev had three as the Martins banged out 17 hits against a trio of Hadley pitchers. Abe Paulzine and Derek Platt scored runs for the Buttermakers (20-12).
“It seems like our hitting is heating up at the right time,” said Fairmont manager Levi Becker. “Tennyson has been huge during the playoffs, hitting and pitching.

“We all wanted to get back at Hadley after getting smoked earlier this year and Tennyson clearly set the tone with a clean top of the first and then following it up with a bomb.”
The series resumes Saturday afternoon at 2 in Hadley. Game 3, if necessary, will be Sunday at noon in Hadley. That’s two hours earlier than normal starting time, a change necessitated because of the Minnesota Baseball Association state-tournament bracket show that will be streamed on the internet early Sunday evening.
Milroy and Luverne have already qualified for the state C tournament from Region 13C. Fairmont and Hadley are playing for third place and the region’s third and final spot in the state tourney, which will be at sites in Faribault, Dundas and Miesville.
