Friday prep roundup: Worthington boys and girls golf post victories against Windom Area

Mia Nixon was the medalist for WHS girls golf. The Trojans posted a season best score of 190. Ben Mahlberg debuts in center field for WHS baseball.

Girls Golf

Worthington 190, Windom Area 226

WINDOM — The Worthington Trojans girls golf team set a new season score in Friday afternoon Big South Conference dual at Windom Area.

Mia Nixon shot a strong round. She sunk a great putt on hole six to score a birdie. Nixon was the meet’s medalist with her score of 44.

WHS junior Madison Beckmann finished second with a score of 47. Lilly Mahlberg tied for third and shot 48. Tarren Spartz shot 51 and was in sixth place. Claire Mahlberg and Ellie Weg tied for seventh with 54.

Ada Lund paced the Eagles with her third place finish of 48 strokes. Senior Miranda Cory scored 50. Ali Lund scored 56 and Olivia Jpyce scored 72.

Liv Vander Kooi was the top finisher for WHS junior varsity. She scored 86.

The Trojans are playing consistent and great golf as the season progresses. WHS will play in the Big South Conference final round on Monday at Dakota Ridge in Morton, Minnesota.

Wabasso 252, HL-O/F/W-WG 256

WESTBROOK — Chloe Rohlik was the medalist for Wabasso in a tightly contested dual with Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda/Westbrook-Walnut Grove. Rohlik shot a 52 for the victorious Rabbits.

Marenna Bang paced the Coyotes with a score of 54. Ava Herding and Irish Hollahan tied for fourth with 60 strokes/ Ava Boomgaarden shot an 82.

Boys Golf

Worthington 169, Windom Area 169

WINDOM — Worthington boys golf earned a tiebreaker victory over Windom Area. Andrew Mulder’s pivotal fifth score of 45 pushed WHS to a Big South Conference victory. When teams are tied the fifth varsity score is used as the first tiebreaker criteria.

Logan Powers from Worthington tied Carter Rossow and Eli Lund from Windom Area for the medalist score. The trio had 37 strokes.

Greyson Elder scored 39 for the Eagles and placed fourth. Logan Hanson scored 52 for the Eagles’ final scorer.

Spenser Nickel, Tyler Jaycox and Spenser Braaksma scored 44 each for WHS.

Wesley Widboom was ninth and scored 49. Ryan Dorcey was the highest junior varsity scorer for WHS with 50.

HL-O/F/W-WG 176, Wabasso Incomplete

WESTBROOK — Nathan Kueny was two under par for Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda/Westbrook-Walnut Grove in a non-conference meet against Wabasso.

Brady Ross was second and scored 42. Ian Bumgardner scored 49 and placed third.

Neil Kuehl was fifth and shot 51. Mason Ommen shot 53.

Aidan Lanoue paced the Rabbits and scored 50. Christian Sanow scored 51 and placed fifth.

Baseball 

Le Sueur-Henderson/St. Peter 5, Worthington 4

ST PETER — Worthington scored three runs in the top of the first, but Le Sueur-Henderson/St. Peter worked its way back into the game and delivered a walkoff 5-4 victory in the bottom of the ninth.

Triston Sauerbrei pitched six and one-third innings for WHS he allowed nine hits, four walks, four strikeouts and three earned runs.

Tucker Brandner pitched two and one-thirds innings. He allowed three walks, one hit, one earned run and four strikeouts.

Sauerbrei reached base three times for the Trojans. He hit a single and took first twice on balls. Cade Grimmius delivered a single and also walked twice while batting in a run.

Chase Byrne had a hit, a walk, and a run batted in.

Ben Mahlberg started in center field and hit a single. Cooper McCoy moved to third base and had a hit.

Mathias Noble scored a hit and a run for WHS.Sauerbrei, Brandner and McCoy all scored a run each.

Tate Olson had two hits and two RBIs for the Saints. Sam Moelter scored two hits and pitched eight innings.

Drew Simonette and Ashton Volk scored two runs.

Worthington hosts Luverne on Tuesday.

Le Sueur-Henderson/St. Peter 001 101 101 – 5 10 1

Windom Area 11, JCC 0

WINDOM — Drew Rothenberger pitched a five inning one-hit shutout for the Windom Area Eagles against conference opponent JCC.

Rothenberger scored two runs for the Eagles. Henry Erickson, Quintin Tietz, Hayden Tietz and Tucker Renquist scored two runs apiece for the Eagles.

Brennen Runge was the lone Huskie to score a hit.

The Eagles season record is 8-5.
