Girls basketball: JCC stops Luverne, Gehl scores 1,000th point for Fulda

LUVERNE -- Jackson County Central defeated Southwest Conference foe Luverne in a closely-fought high school girls basketball game Friday night, 65-55.

For the Huskies, Sarah Brandt led with 21 points and 13 rebounds, followed by Julia Schumann with 15 points and six rebounds, and Kaylee Burmeister added 13 points. Rachel Johnson added five steals, and Sydney Eddy added 12 rebounds.
Morgan Haugen’s 17 points, six assists and five steals weren’t enough for Luverne. Also adding points for the Cardinals was Tayla Peterson, who finished with 12.

FULDA -Senior forward Melissa Gehl scored her thousandth point for the Fulda Raiders, but it wasn’t enough to produce a win.
In a close game all the way, Southwestern United won the game helped by solid efforts from Sonja Peters, Courtney Place and Andrea Hinkeldey. Peters had 15-points and four-rebounds. Place had 12 points, 16 rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Hinkeldey added 12 points and four rebounds.
Gehl scored 20 points for the Raiders. Teammate Sariah Cheadle had 21.

RRC 76, Ellsworth 40
ELLSWORTH - The RRC Falcons shot well throughout the contest and defeated Ellsworth by a wide margin. Alexa Huisman nearly had a double-double for the Panthers, with 18 points, nine rebounds, and six blocks.
Ramsey Piotter notched 18 points for the Falcons, and Rachel Kedl added 14 points.
Ellsworth drops to 4-7 with the loss.

TYLER– The Russel-Tyler-Ruthton Knights spread their scoring throughout the team and won a 62-43 contest over Murray County Central. Ashlynn Wabeke scored 15, and Shayna Possail added 12 points.
For MCC, Morgan Begrends tallied 19 points, and Jade Giese scored 21.
The loss drops MCC to 4-7 overall.

SIBLEY, Iowa - Bridget Doeden scored 16 points and had nine rebounds to lead Sibley-Ocheyedan past arch-rival Sheldon. Alyssa Stofferan added 12 points while teammate Kayla Ackerman had seven points, five rebounds, three assists and five steals.
For Sheldon, Mackensey Radke and Emily Johnson each scored 13 points.
Sibley-Ocheyedan is 8-5 on the season.

ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Three players scored in double figures to lead Maurice-Orange City/Floyd Valley to a convincing victory over Central Lyon. Katie Landhuis scored 17 points, Alexis Conway 15 and Emily McDonald 12.
With the triumph, the top-rated team in Class 3A improved to 13-1 on the season.
Sarah Halse scored 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead Central Lyon, now 4-9.
