NEW ULM - A slow start was more than Worthington could overcome Thursday in a 7-0 road defeat at the hands of New Ulm.
The Trojans trailed 3-0 in a hurry. For a team that has struggled to score goals all season, that spelled trouble.
“We started out very slow,” said Worthington coach Emily Ahlquist. “They scored three goals in the first 15 or 20 minutes. It was like we were dead on our feet.”
She said her team picked up its play after that, but a physical game led to some injuries that left the Trojans even further hampered. Still, they were able to create a few good scoring opportunities.
Ahlquist said Saida Garcia had a good look but just couldn’t hit the back of the net after chasing down a through-ball. McKayla Gravenhof and Ahmitara Alwal also got solid shots off, but neither amounted to a tally on the Worthington side of the scoreboard.
“We made some good passes and got some good combinations up front, but we just can’t find the net,” Ahlquist said.
