LUVERNE - The host Luverne Cardinals girls tennis team won all three doubles matches to secure a 4-3 victory over Sioux Falls Lincoln JV Friday.
Tatiana Gust and Kayla Rud, at first doubles, defeated Olivia Lovrien and Brita Quello 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 supertiebreaker. Sierra Wieneke and Emily Wendland beat Meredith Reiner and Aya Naoe 6-2, 6-2 at second doubles. And at third doubles, the Cardinals’ Kennedy Gonnerman and Brianna Jonason topped Kate Grady and Jasmyn Isham 6-4, 6-0.
Luverne’s only win at singles came at No. 4 singles as Riley Severtson won by forfeit.
At No. 1 singles, Lincoln’s Brooke Lovrien beat Luverne’s Samantha Pierce 6-0, 7-6 (7-4 tiebreaker). Lincoln’s Sydney Dixen topped Joci Oye 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. And at No. 3 singles, Margaret Heege defeated Luverne’s Carissa Cunningham 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-5 supertiebreaker.
“We gave it our best effort in singles. There were some great points at every match,” said Luverne head coach Greg Antoine. “In doubles we were pretty strong today. We are getting better at finding the open court and putting the point away.”
Antoine also said Luverne’s serving was good. But the girls still need to become more aggressive during points.
Luverne is 2-6 on the season and hosts Blue Earth Area on Tuesday.
