LUVERNE - Cardinals coach Greg Antoine called it the closest 7-0 match he’d been associated with. Luverne blanked the visiting Worthington Trojans girls tennis team Monday in a meet where four matches went three sets and some of them featured tiebreakers.
The first singles match between Luverne’s Paige Adams and Worthington’s Emily Williamson - won by Adams 6-7 (3-7 tiebreaker), 6-0, 6-0 - also featured some confusion. There was a controversy in the tiebreaker score, recalled Antoine, and according to the rules both players discussed the situation until both agreed on what the score should be. Both players “did a good job of sorting it out,” said Antoine.
Williamson won the set, then Adams won the next two sets.
“She showed what she was made of by putting the loss of the first set behind her and becoming totally focused on the next point, game and set,” Antoine said.
At second singles, Luverne’s Kynzie Smedsrud defeated Rachel Drietz 6-3, 6-7 (3-7 tiebreak), 6-2. McKenzi Wenninger topped Worthington’s Laura Wetering 7-6 (7-5 tiebreak), 6-3 at third singles, and at fourth singles Samantha Pierce was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Sara Schroeder.
The LHS first doubles duo of Brianna Erickson and Danielle Kneip beat the Trojans’ Sarah Janssen and Makensie Carstensen 6-1, 5-7, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles Lexie Severtson and Tatiana Gust defeated Miranda LeBrun and Alicia Khatt 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. And at No. 3 doubles Monaya Hustoft and Joci Oye bested Brianna Kempema and Paige Stewart 6-1, 6-3.
