WORTHINGTON - In the midst of a busy week of tennis, the Worthington Trojans defeated Southwest Conference opponent Redwood Valley Thursday at the junior high courts.
Another Southwest Conference opponent, Pipestone Area, is right around the corner - today, in fact, and again at the junior high courts.
Worthington handled Redwood Valley 5-2, winning three of four singles matches and two of three doubles contests.
“All in all, I felt very good with how we played,” said WHS head coach Mike Marquardt. “We finished outstanding. It’s always good to get a conference win. The competition was solid. I’m looking forward to taking on another conference opponent tomorrow with Pipestone.”
The Trojans’ first singles entry, junior Emily Williamson, defeated Redwood Valley’s Ahnna Malecek 6-1, 6-1 on Thursday. The Cardinals’ Alyssa Lueck outplayed Worthington’s Rachel Drietz 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, but at third singles Worthington’s Laura Wetering was a 6-3, 6-2 victor over Carli Grannes. At fourth singles, the Trojans’ Shelby Larson defeated Alexis Johnson 6-4, 6-3.
Redwood Valley won the match at first doubles, as Abby Einck and Kenzie Jeseritz topped Makensie Carstensen and Sarah Janssen 6-4, 7-5. Worthington’s No. 2 doubles duo of Annie Lesnar and Brianna Kempema took care of Tori Jeseritz and Rhylee Schmidt 6-0, 6-4. And the Trojans’ No. 3 team of Miranda LeBrun and Alicia Khatt dispatched the Cards’ Kenzie Manthei and Kylie Doering 6-2, 6-1.
