SHERBURN -In Minnesota high school girls varsity tennis, rules state that four singles matches and three doubles matches are played.
If the rules had been reversed on Tuesday, the results for Worthington might have been different.
The Trojans girls tennis team traveled to play Martin County West and lost, 4-3. All the singles matches went West’s way, and all the doubles matches went Worthington’s way.
The one match that went three sets was at third singles, where Worthington’s Laura Wetering competed against Martin County West’s Tori Russenburger. Wetering lost the first set 0-6 but won the second set 6-4. Russenburger took the third set 6-0.
At first singles, West’s Stephanie Zerres defeated Worthington’s Emily Williamson 6-1, 6-0. At second singles, the Mavericks’ Shawna Dressen beat the Trojans’ Rachel Drietz 6-4, 6-3. And at fourth singles, Alisa Russenberger topped Paige Stewart 6-0, 6-2.
Worthington fared much better at doubles. MaKensie Carstensen and Sarah Janssen defeated the Mavs’ Bailey Ebeling and Harley Holtz 6-4, 6-2 at first doubles. Brianna Kempema and Annie Lesnar topped Ily Schlenk and Sophie Bareiss 6-3, 6-2. And Miranda LeBrun and Alicia Khatt were 6-1, 6-0 winners over the Mavericks’ Maddi Ebeling and Brooke Forstrom at third doubles.
The Trojans are back in action Thursday at home against Redwood Valley.
