Putnam paces Trojans at Worthington Invitational girls golf tourney
WORTHINGTON -- Maggie Putnam’s season is off to a great start.
A junior on Worthington’s girls golf team, Putnam once again had her team’s best score during Saturday’s Worthington Invitational.
Putnam had a 93 to lead the Trojans and placed sixth overall.
“Maggie is having a strong start to the year,” WHS head coach Paul Barduson said. “Highlight of her day was two birdies. She had a birdie on Hole 10 and 18. Birdies are hard to come by and her first hole of the day, she had a birdie. That most likely set the tone for her round. Placing in the top six with some good competition keeps adding to her good start.”
Fairmont’s Bergen Senf was the medalist with an 81, while Lac qui Parle Valley’s Sarah Halvorson was second with an 84. Murray County Central’s Abby Hamman was third with an 86, and LQPV’s Rachel Halvorson was fourth with an 87. Windom Area’s Paige Pignam was fifth with a 91.
“That shows that southwest Minnesota has some good girls golf teams and individuals,” Barduson said. “That’s only going to help us as we keep playing some of these teams to make our team stronger.”
LQPV won the team competition with a 377, while Fairmont was second with a 395. MCC finished third with a 405, and Luverne was fourth with a 428. Jackson County Central and Windom Area each had a 429, followed by Worthington’s 435.
“It was quite wet out there, so the course played longer,” Barduson said. “If we’re not carrying the ball, it's going to add a few strokes with the course playing longer than its regulation. Once again, it’s another good learning curve. It’s the first 18-hole tournament for a lot of the younger girls. To get that one under our belt on April 6th is a good thing.”
Bailey Weg shot a 105 for WHS, while Syria Freimuth had a 117 and Lilly Mahlberg carded a 120.
MCC’s Amber Boock had a 102, while Paige Behrends finished with a 104 and Ciera Tutt scored a 113.
Luverne’s Anna Huisman led the way with a 100, while Paige Sandbulte and Morgan Gonnerman each had a 108 and McCall Stegenga finished with a 112.
Windom Area had scoring rounds from Lily Mellstrom (107), Allie Ward (114) and Miranda Cory (117).
JCC’s Regan Farmer led the Huskies with a 101, while Megan Gallagher scored a 107, Sydney Sadusky had a 110 and Nelah Hash carded a 111.
Adrian was led by Gracia Elias’ 107. Annika Elias finished with a 109, Madelyn Odell had a 112 and Madeline Wagner scored a 115.
Pipestone Area’s Emma Budden led the Arrows with a 101, while Jenna Kerkhaert scored a 106.
