Herrig reaches 1,000 career point milestone in ML/B-O's victory

MOUNTAIN LAKE -- Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin's Barrett Herrig eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark Saturday in leading the Wolverines past the Truman Bluejays, 59-48, in the opening round of the boys' Section 2A basketball tournament.

Herrig needed 11 points entering the game to reach the milestone, and finished with a team-high 19 points and 17 rebounds for ML/B-0 (13-12).

Matt Strom added 12 points, while Taylor Adrian added 10 and Kyle Schroeder, who is recovering from a knee injury, scored nine points.

Truman (10-17) was led by Marc Wiederhoeft with 32 points and seven rebounds.

As the No. 4 seed, the Wolverines will travel to face No. 1 seeded Granada-Huntley-East Chain Tuesday in East Chain.

Section 3AA PA 59, Windom 56

PIPESTONE -- Behind 17 points from Sam Schnieder and 13 points from Shelby Jones, the Pipestone Arrows defeated the Windom Eagles in the first round of the boys' section 3AA basketball tournament Saturday.

Windom (9-16) had a 24-19 lead at the break, but the Arrows (12-11) outscored the Eagles 40-32 in the final 18 minutes to claim the victory.

Windom was led by Bryce Grove with a game-high 22 points, while Brett Dumke (15) and Michael Johnson (13) each scored in double figures.

PA will advance to face Martin County West at 6 p.m. Thursday in Windom.

Fairmont 68, JCC 56

JACKSON -- Despite cutting the lead to one-point in the final five minutes, Jackson County Central came up just short against Fairmont in the opening round of the boys' section 3AA basketball tournament Saturday.

Scott Benson led the Huskies (10-15) with 17 points, while Patrick Garvin scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists.

Ryan Rasche added 12 points, and Nathan Brandt scored eight points on the night.

Jeff Janssen led Fairmont (15-9) with 33 points, including a 16-of-18 performance from the free throw line.

Fairmont will face Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Tuesday night in Windom.

T-M-B 60, Luverne 23

TRACY -- Brandon Kirk led a trio of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton players in double figures in the Panther's victory over Luverne Saturday in the opening round of the section 3AA boys' basketball tournament.

Steve Paradis scored 13 points and had seven rebounds, while Anthony Dolan added 11 points. Kirk grabbed six rebounds and had five steals for T-M-B (19-7), who outscored the Cardinals 39-9 in the second half.

Kyle Heronimus led Luverne (3-21) with 11 points and six rebounds.

T-M-B will face Fairmont at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Windom.
