Section 3A girls hockey: Trojans end season in Mankato

Worthington High School’s girls hockey season came to a conclusion Friday night in Mankato, as the Trojans dropped an 8-4 decision to Mankato West at All Seasons Arena in the first round of the Section 3A tournament.

In other first-round Section 3A games, Marshall defeated Fairmont 3-2 in two overtimes, and Luverne topped Windom Area 3-1.

Marshall, which out-shot Fairmont 48-19, got the game-winning goal off the stick of Logan Sherman in the second OT.

The tournament resumes today (Saturday). Mankato West plays Marshall at 3:30 p.m. at Red Baron Arena in Marshall, and Luverne plays Mankato East at All Seasons Arena in a 5:30 p.m. start. The finals are slated for Tuesday at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, at 7:30 p.m.

MW 8, Worthington 4

MANKATO -- Lindsey Hays scored four of Mankato West’s eight goals, including the Scarlets’ first three goals of the game.

Three of Worthington’s goals were scored in the third period.

The Trojans’ first score came in the second period by Ashton Fogelman, who also scored the visitors’ final goal of the contest. Kessey Aljets also scored twice for Worthington, the tournament’s No. 6 seed.

West, the No. 3 seed of the tournament, also got goals from Caitlin Hvinden, Molly Grundhoffer, Sunshine Langworthy and Rachel Trautman.

Mankato West out-shot Worthington 46-16.

Worthington concludes its season with a 6-18 record.
