MANKATO -- Though they ultimately were beaten in overtime, the Worthington High School girls hockey Trojans made a big step forward Tuesday night in the early part of their season.

In their season opener, WHS lost 10-0 at Luverne. On Saturday, they took host Mankato West into overtime before falling, 4-3.

"It was a good game. The girls showed great strides of improvement from last week," said head coach Chad Nickel.

West scored the only goal in the first period. Worthington answered with three goals in the second period -- two by Kessey Aljets and another from Aubree Pederson. Kory Nickel, MaKenna Nickel and Pederson were credited with assists.

Down 3-1, West tallied a pair of goals in the third period and got the game-winner in overtime.

For the game, Mankato West out-shot Worthington 44-23.

Worthington is back in action Saturday for a 1 p.m. game in Waseca.
