DES MOINES, Iowa -- Central Lyon’s Gable Sieperda made headlines on Thursday as he set a new Class 1A record in the 3,200-meter run, finishing in 9:15.30, but he was far from the only area athlete competing at the Iowa State Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday and Friday.
Sibley-Ocheyedan sophomore Grant Brouwer cleared 6-4 in the high jump on Friday, good for second place, behind only Miles Rupiper of Kuemper Catholic’s 6-6.
Sibley-Ocheyedan senior Caleb Freeman was 10th in the Class 2A shot put with a throw of 50-11.5 on Thursday.
Sheldon sophomore Ashlyn Albrecht jumped her way to second place in the long jump in Class 2A, with a leap of 17-01.25. She was behind only Davis County senior Jaylynn Sharp’s 17-03.00. Albrecht’s jump bested her previous personal record of 17.15, which she set at the Sioux City Relays on April 21.
Albrecht’s Orab teammate, senior Brandon Winkel, was sixth in the long jump (20-2.5), while Sheldon’s boys 4x800 relay team of Steven Van Meeteren, Kyle Boerhave, Eric Heibult and Mitchal Van Gorp finished 20th (8:40.86), and junior Kacy Kamphoff finished 21st in the 400 (1:03.43).

Central Lyon’s Parker Metzger finished 16th in the shot put in Class 1A, with a throw of 46-00.75 on Thursday. On Friday, fellow Lions throwers Austin DeNoble and Kolten Bus finished 15th (126-02) and 23rd (113-05) respectively in the discus.
A pair of Central Lyon relay teams finished sixth and 12th on Friday. The girls 4x200 team of Becca Roskam, Elle Peterson, Callie Yeakel and Ashley Boer finished 12th (1:50.69), while the boys 4x100 team of Seth Deatsch, Mitch Van Beek, Nick White and Riley Van Wyhe finished sixth (44.78).
