DES MOINES, Iowa -- Trey Schuck scored a 20-11 major decision over Remington Meeker in the final match at 120 pounds Wednesday night, giving the Sibley-Ocheyedan High School wrestling team a 37-35 victory over Logan-Magnolia in the fifth-place match of the Iowa Class 1A state tournament.

The Generals lost their first-round match at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, 37-30, to Missouri Valley, then beat Wapsie Valley 44-28 in the consolation semifinals.

In the fifth-place match, Sibley-Ocheyedan fell behind early as Logan-Magnolia won the first three matches (126, 132, 138 pounds) to assume a 14-0 lead. But the Generals’ Dylan Schuck came through with a fall at 145 pounds, and after a L-M win at 152, Garrett Sayler and Trent Kruger won for the Generals at 160 and 170 (Kruger by fall). Sibley-Ocheyedan also got victories from Hunter Dejong at 195, Matt Naig at 285 and Jose Flores at 106.

Dejong pinned his man in just 19 seconds. Naig and Flores also recorded first-period pins.

While the Generals secured their fifth-place plaque in their final bout, a loss in the final bout of the first round sent them into the consolation bracket. A fall by Naig in just 41 seconds at 285 pounds against Missouri Valley brought the northwest Iowa team within four of Missouri Valley, 34-30, with one match to go. When Flores lost a 7-4 decision to Valley’s Sam Kyle at 106 pounds, Sibley-Ocheyedan’s dream of a state championship was ended.

Generals Naig, Jordan Klein (132), Dylan Schuck (145), Kruger (170) and Dejong (195) also won matches in the opener. Like Naig, Klein, Schuck, Kruger and Dejong had falls.

In their second match against Wapsie Valley, Generals Trey Schuck (120), Dylan Schuck (145), Sayler (160), Kruger (170), Dejong (195), Erick Olvera (220), Naig (285) and Flores (106) won matches. Both Schucks, Dejong, Olvera, Naig and Flores pinned their opponents.

Lisbon captured the Class 1A championship with a 45-26 win over Don Bosco. Lake Mills placed third with a 39-37 win over Missouri Valley. Wapsie Valley beat Interstate 50-17 for seventh place.

Several Sibley-Ocheyedan wrestlers will begin competing in the individual portion of the tournament this morning (Thursday). The competition continues through Saturday.
