SLEEPY EYE -- Worthington Post 5’s season came to an end after a pair of 10-run losses on Thursday in American Legion baseball Division I, Sub-State 2 action in Sleepy Eye. In its first game of the day, Post 5 fell to Mankato National 12-2 to take its first loss in the double-elimination tournament. Then, Worthington lost to Mankato American 14-4 and was eliminated.
Post 5 opened the contest against Mankato National with a run in the first inning. Tucker Sorenson doubled and was driven in on a Logan Huisman single. It added another in the second when Eli Gaul scored on a bases-loaded single by Karter Honius to tie the game at 2.
But a four-run third inning by National opened the game up, and they added two runs in each of the fourth, sixth and seventh.
“I was pretty proud of them,” Worthington coach Tim Gaul said. “For the first few innings, some of the coaches in the stands said it was a pretty competitive game. And the boys weren’t intimidated, but they kept tagging it on and tagging it on. We just couldn’t put it together to bring any more runs in. My guys didn’t get down on themselves.”
In the do-or-die matchup with Mankato American, Post 5 fell to a team they had defeated 7-1 10 days earlier. But when it mattered most, American came away with the victory.
American consistently added runs throughout the game while racking up 18 hits, but really pulled away late with eight runs in the final three innings, including a four-run ninth.
Post 5 scored in the third inning, when Gaul doubled in Shawn Hurley. It added a pair of runs in the fourth when Linder scored on a King Blanchette double, and Manny Dominguez drove him in with a single. And in the fifth, Honius scored as Hurley reached on an error.
