ALEXANDRIA -- The Worthington American Legion baseball team won one and lost two games at last weekend's Alexandria Tournament. Post 5 lost the opener 15-7 to Apple Valley, defeated Litchfield 2-1 and lost to Shakopee in the championship bracket by a 14-1 score.
Despite the scores, Post 5 coach Tim Gaul said his Worthington outfit performed well.
"The boys played pretty welll defensively, continued to hit well, and our pitchers did a great job throwing strikes," he said. "They battled throughout, and the Apple Valley and Shakopee games were both competitive until the end."
Eric Heidebrink pitched five innings in the Apple Valley game, walking three but hitting four batters. Tyler Linder also pitched an inning.
After Post 5 scored three runs in the top of the first inning, Apple Valley plated six in the bottom of the first. But Worthington hung tough, trailing just 7-5 in the sixth inning before Apple Valley pulled away.

Heidebrink went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, and Brayden Donkersloot went 2-for-3.
Against Litchfield, Logan Huisman and Tucker Sorenson took care of mound duties. Neither pitcher issued a walk, and Huisman struck out five in 6.1 innings.
"He had ultimate control and his breaking pitches were almost unhittable," said Gaul. "Tucker came in to relieve and was completely overpowering."
Sorenson was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Heidebrink was 1-for-3 with the game-winning hit in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the Shakopee game, Donkersloot pitched 3.2 innings, walking one and striking out four. Turner Rogers finished up.
Linder was 2-for-2 with the bat, with an RBI. Rogers hit a double.
Worthington, which hosts Luverne on Tuesday in a 7:30 p.m. start, is 8-3 on the summer.
