ST. CLOUD -- The Minnesota West baseball team dropped to 0-4 on the season after losing both games in a doubleheader to Mesabi Range Monday night.
The first game was a heartbreaker, with the Bluejays losing 2-1 in the final inning.
The game was scoreless entering the seventh inning when Mitchell Jensen's single scored Nate Bierman to put the Bluejays up 1-0.
But they couldn't hold on.
MR put a runner on base in the bottom of the inning and he advanced to third when MW overthrew the ball on his attempt to steal. The next batter came up and had a single to score the runner from third and tie the game at 1-all.
There were two more hits that inning to bring in the game-winning run.
In that game, Jensen went 1-for-4 with an RBI, Eric Wieneke went 3-for-4 and pitcher Shane Schoborg tossed 6 2/3 innings, gave up two runs on eight hits and recorded five strikeouts.
"The first one was tough to swallow," MW head coach Jeff Linder said. "We had a bad throwing error that gave them the momentum. That takes a lot of life out of you."
The second game was a little rougher for the Bluejays.
MW scored two quick runs in the first inning, but didn't score for the remainder of the game.
MR had a six-run third inning and followed up with a run in the fourth and fifth innings and closed the game with a three-run seventh.
The Bluejays dropped the contest 11-2.
Wieneke went 1-for-3, Jensen was 1-for-3 and Adam Munkel was 1-for-1 with an RBI-double.
"There's a noticeable improvement, but we had our opportunities and didn't get it done today," Linder said.
The Bluejays' next game is at home against Northland in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
