Monday sports roundup: SWC's Pater sets all-time assists record


A roundup of Monday night high school sports:

Boys basketball

SWC 74, Canby 39

CANBY -- Southwest Christian Eagles senior guard Avery Pater has had lots of impressive boys basketball games in his career, and he had another good one Monday night in a 74-39 win over Canby. He scored 13 points with six rebounds and three steals.


But was especially noteworthy was the seven assists that he made. Those seven assists gave him 394 in his varsity career, good enough to break the school’s all-time assist record formerly held by Dominic Nibbelink.

The victory pushed the state-ranked Eagles to 15-0 on the season. Pater’s teammate, Kade Fey, led the Eagles in scoring with 26 points, and in rebounds with seven. Hunter Vander Haar added 10 points and six rebounds, and Jacob Van Dam had nine points.

Will Varcoe led Canby with 13 points.

The Lancers turned the ball over 32 times against Southwest Christian’s defense. Meanwhile, the Eagles collected 24 assists as a team, committing just 13 turnovers of their own.

Dawson-Boyd 72, Pipestone Area 67

PIPESTONE -- At one point in the second half, Pipestone Area enjoyed a 12-point lead. But Dawson-Boyd came back to send the game into overtime, then outscored the Arrows 11-6 in the extended period.


Romell Horton had 23 points, Zach Durfee 18 and Mike Kvaal 12 to lead the Blackjacks.

Dawson Kellen scored 28 points for Pipestone Area. Aaron Lingen and J.T. Tinklenberg chimed in with 17 and 12 points, respectively.

Cedar Mountain 78, HL-O/Fulda 70

MORGAN -- Three Cedar Mountain players scored 19 points or more in an offensive battle against Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda. Trey Peterson-Juhl had 23 points while Chris Dow and Caden Kleinschmidt had 19 apiece.

Eli Fest scored 24 points for HL-O/F. Tyler Madison added 18 points and six rebounds. Zach Thier had 12 points and Brandon Hinkeldey had 11.

HL-O/F is 5-10 on the season.

Springfield 82, W-WG 54

SPRINGFIELD -- The Springfield Tigers, rated eighth in Minnesota Class A, easily overcame Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

No Charger players reached double figures. Four of them scored eight points: Ethan Mischke, Austin Parker, Nathan Ross and Brady Ross.

Springfield beat W-WG in transition for most of the night, and also shot well -- converting 26 of 48 from 2-point range and six of 10 from beyond the arc.

W-WG is 8-6 on the season.

Adrian/Ellsworth 71, Sibley-Ocheyedan 60

ADRIAN -- Four players from Adrian/Ellsworth scored in double figures. Noah Reyne had 21 points to go along with three steals. Peyton Lewis had 19 points and eight rebounds. Grant Jansma and Lance Luettel each had 11 points.

Caleb Meyer with 17 and Beau Jenness with 12 led Sibley-Ocheyedan.

Girls basketball

ADRIAN -- Ashlyn Meester scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help Adrian-Ellsworth beat Sibley-Ocheyedan in a battle between southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa girls teams.

Moriah Bullerman had 10 points and four assists to help A/E.

Marissa Ackerman scored 14 points with 10 rebounds for the visiting Generals, and teammate Madison Brouwer had 13 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.

Luverne 59, Edgerton 37

EDGERTON -- Brooklyn Ver Steeg scored 24 points as Luverne defeated Edgerton Public, and Mallory Thorson scored 14 points to help the effort.

Reece Wassink tallied 16 points for Edgerton, which fell behind 35-22 at halftime and couldn’t make up the difference in the second half.

MOUNTAIN LAKE -- Helped by 18-for-24 free throw shooting, Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey got the better of Martin County West.

Margo Stoesz led the way with 18 points, Brooke Naas had 11 and Anika Fast 10.

Sami Meyer paced Martin County West with 12 points.

Luverne 7, Minnesota River 1

LE SUEUR -- Roz Oye, Rylee Gee and Kamryn Van Batavia each scored two goals as Luverne swept past host Minnesota River. Reghan Bork had the Cardinals’ other goal.

Luverne out-shot Minnesota River 38-16 in the game.
