GRAND RAPIDS -- Logan Massop passed for 259 yards and fired a pair of touchdown strikes Saturday afternoon to help spark the Minnesota West Bluejays to a season-opening 40-0 victory over the Itasca Vikings in a Minnesota College Athletic Conference football game.
Massop, who completed 14 of 23 passes and also threw two interceptions, hooked up with Calvin Davidson (42 yards) and Rex Johnson (15 yards) for scoring plays to highlight a dominant Bluejays' win.
"This was a good way to open the season," Minnesota West head coach Jeff Linder said. "We played well on both sides of the ball, but we still have a lot to work on."
Minnesota West (1-0) gained a total of 373 yards offensively, including 259 passing and 114 rushing. Kevin Harris rushed the ball 15 times for 59 yards, while DeShawn Gohl carried 10 times for 42 yards.
Harris (25-yard run), Carsen Nyborg (four-yard run) and Michael Knight (50-yard interception return) each scored a touchdown for the Bluejays, who led 10-0 at halftime and outscored the Vikings 30-0 in the second half.
Davidson had four receptions for 94 yards, and Johnson finished with two catches for 51 yards.
Tyler Smith kicked a pair of field goals -- 21 yards in the first quarter and 24 yards in the fourth quarter -- and was also 4-for-5 on PAT kicks. Smith also averaged 33 yards per punt in the game.
Minnesota West limited Itasca (0-1) to just 106 yards of offense -- 62 rushing and 44 passing. The Bluejays also recovered three fumbles on the day.
The Bluejays play Fond du Lac Saturday at home. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Trojan Field.
