Nelson, Tofteland lead Luverne to cc victories


LUVERNE -- Tenley Nelson and Brayden Tofteland each won individual titles Saturday morning, leading Luverne to twin team championships in the annual running of the Bruce Gluf Classic high school cross country meet.

Nelson paced a dominant LHS win in the varsity girls’ race, covering the 5,000-meter distance in 19:45.7. She was followed by Cardinal teammates Regan Feit (20:27.3), Jenna DeBates (20:57.9) and Elizabeth Wagner (21:00.4) before Jackson County Central sophomore Olivia Anderson (fifth, 21:00.4) and Southwest Christian/Edgerton freshman Taylor Post (sixth, 21:35.4) broke up Luverne’s near-perfect score.

After three South Dakota runners (two from Garretson and one from Dell Rapids) entered the chute, Luverne’s Tiana Lais (10th overall, sixth in the team scoring) clinched the Cardinals’ stellar team triumph with her time of 22:43.3, giving LHS a low score of 16 points (1-2-3-4-6).

SWC/E was second with 45 points (5-7-8-12-13), while Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey was third with its score of 69 (10-11-15-16-17). Garretson, Dell Rapids and JCC were each incomplete.

Tofteland won the varsity boys’ race by more than a minute, clocking a stellar time of 17:01.6 on the same 5,000-meter course. It was the third individual victory of the season for Tofteland, who also finished first overall at Fairmont (Aug. 23) and Beresford, S.D. (Aug. 30).


Preston Bohl of Garretson was second (18:10.6), followed by Logan Anderson of Dell Rapids (18:32.9), JCC’s Mason Bobb (18:33.3), MLA/C’s Kody Wassman (18:34.3), MLA/C’s Caden Swoboda (18:47.0) Heron Lake-Okabena’s Paul Salentiny (18:47.4), MLA/C’s Kaleb Eickhoff (18:47.4), Luverne’s Jonah Friedrichsen (18:54.1) and Luverne’s Camden Janiszeski (18:56.6).

In the team scoring, Luverne (1-6-7-11-14) tallied 39 points to edge MLA/C (3-4-5-12-17) and JCC (2-8-9-10-13) who notched 41 and 42 points, respectively. Garretson, Dell Rapids, HL-O, SWC/E and Ellsworth were all incomplete.

HL-O’s Tim Salentiny won the junior high boys’ 3,200-meter race with a time of 12:02.9, while Luverne’s Sage Viessman was second (12:25.0).

Luverne runners Kayla Bloemendaal (14:17.9) and Maria Rops (14:41.4) were the first two finishers in the junior high girls’ race over the same course.
