PIPESTONE - Two early runs had Pipestone Area in the lead for quite a while Tuesday, but then the wheels came off.
Canby scored four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to go up 8-2 and the Arrows couldn’t recover. They dropped their nonconference season opener 9-3.
It started out well for the home team. Boyer Bouman walked and stole second. He eventually wheeled around to score the game’s first run. A three-base error by the Lancers helped Mauricio Sada circle the bases as well and it was 2-0 Arrows at the end of one.
Canby finally got one back in the top of the fourth on a Pipestone Area miscue and Zach Nuy was dialed in on the mound. A big two-run double for Tanner Kack in the top of the fifth put the Lancers on top. They got two more before the inning was over and went up by as many as seven at 9-2 before Pipestone got the sticks going again.
Blake Wolters led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and eventually scored on a passed ball. That was all the Arrows could muster, however.
Sada got the start and took a no-decision. He struck out five and allowed no earned runs on four hits. Wolters was 2-for-3 with a triple and had the only two hits of the night for the Arrows.

Verhey was a perfect 3-for-3 hitting with a double, while Vajgrt was 3-for-4. Connor Hoffman was 2-for- 4 with two doubles to lead Luverne (2-0).
Vajgrt was the winning pitcher, throwing three innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out five.
The Dragons (0-1) were led by Cody Polzine, who was 2-for-4.
Adrian hosts Mountain Lake on Tuesday, while Luverne is at Pipestone Area the same night.
