MANKATO -- The Southwest Star Concept boys' basketball team upset Mankato Loyola --the No. 1 seed in the South Sub-Section of Section 2A tournament -- with a 51-42 win Thursday night.
With 2:10 left to play, SSC's Justin Jass stole the ball and made a 3-point play to put the Quasars up 44-38.
ML quickly turned around and made a basket to make it a 4-point ballgame. Then, Jass was dribbling up the court, but had the ball stolen from him, leading to another ML basket to make the score 44-42 with 1:53 left to play.
But it was Jass again who made a big play on the next possession, making a pass to Luke Henkels, who scored a basket to put SSC up 46-42 with 1:23 left in the game.
SSC ended up scoring the last seven points of the game to secure the 51-42 upset and advance to the sub-section championship against Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin at 8 p.m. Monday.
